Meet Mrs. S, a home-based murukku seller

When one thinks of murukku, the first thing that springs to mind is how it is manufactured in various textures and whether it requires large machinery to manufacture, given its popularity.

Our visit to a home-based business, on the other hand, proved us wrong. Meet Mrs.S, a charming elderly lady who just wants to be called Mrs.S. Mrs.S is a retired elderly woman in her 70s who works as a homemaker and cooks batches of Murukku, packages it, and sells it on a pre-order basis.

Mrs.S History

Mrs.S used to own a highly acclaimed restaurant in the bustling city center of singapore, the Singapore Island Country Club, serving south indian and malay cuisines such as Nasi Briyani, Curry Rice, Nasi Lemak, Mee Rebus, and other mixed rice dishes, in the early 2000s..

Mrs.S, however, was unable to keep up with the everyday demands of the food and beverage business due to aging and health issues and decided to retire.

But she did not want everything to come to a halt all at once and wanted to find means to continue sharing the love and exquisite taste of her ancestors' recipes. Hence, Mrs. S shifted to a home-based business that provided stability to her health and the opportunity to refine her skills and crafts even further.

Spread the love

We were greatly moved by Mrs. S's statements as we pressed her more on the necessity of spreading the love and delicious taste of her family' recipes. She wanted to keep going since her ancestors' recipes contain the true taste of Murukku, and she didn't want something that reflects Indian ethnic culture and is appreciated and shared by people from all over the world to be lost to modernisation.

She strongly believes that once the trade is lost, it can never be revived back the same ever again. Hence, by sharing this love and exquisite taste of her ancestors' recipes with the world, she seeks for a worthy successor who will live on her lineage and heritage!
